There isn't a ball of anxiety per say, but it can cause your mucus membranes to suddenly produce an excess of their name sake. Part of the fight or flight.

anxiety only causes the sensation of a lump in your throat, there is not actually anything physically there it is just sympathetic activation

No, the anxiety has nothing to do with the throat. It can be caused either as a Thyroid, or a cancer, or to some swelling due to fall, hurt etc. Also can be symptom of cold.

Yes anexity cause lump in the throat, that is patient will have the problem in the throat such as difficulty swallowing Sore throat, Throat ulcer, Mouth ulcer, Throat pain. Take proper measures from your doctor and prevent from diseases.
