Question by  shalom (271)

Do you get a 1099 if you were paid exactly $600 by an employer?

I don't know if I should wait to receive a 1099 before I file my taxes. I already have my other W2s.

No. The IRS classification is that if you make more than $600.00 for a company then you will be issued a 1099 form but not for less.

As with any legal document or citation, the best thing to do is to either contact the person who "awarded" it directly, or to contact an attorney. Typically laws and regulations vary by county and state. In this case I would personally contact your municipal court for more information here.

If you are paid $600 or more, the payer is required to issue a 1099. Technically, this is not an employer, who is require to issue a W-2 and withhold FICA for amounts of $100 or more, but from a contractor.

Unless every cent of that payment was received in the same calendar quarter, you definitely will not need to report that income because your employer won't need to file a 1099. If you had any state, local, Medicare, or Medicaid taxes withheld from your paycheck, then you should and can demand to receive your 1099.

Yep, 1099s get sent to people who made $600 and above in a tax year.

A 1099 should be issued if the amount paid was $600 or more. If the company does not send a 1099, you should still report the amount on your return.

You will indeed get the form because it is over five hundred dollars. It is better to wait because it will not add on more than fifty dollars to pay.
