Do sound waves have their own mass?

Answer by  tommymcg (21)

no. sound waves are just disturbances in the air they don't take up space because it is just the air being moved. the air being moved has mass but the waves don't

No, sound waves do not have any mass. Sound waves are the transmission of sound energy through a form of matter - whether air, water, or air. Sound waves cannot exist without transmitting matter.

Sound waves are longitudinal disturbances that propogate throughfluid or solid media. In air, They consist of pressure variations that alternately compress and decompress the air as the wave passes. While the medium (i.e. air) through which sound passes has mass, the sound wave itself does not.
