Do I need to worry about what my horses are eating in the fields?

The reason you would need to worry is if they are normally kept inside on feed they can get sick if they are allowed to free graze immediately. The amount of time should gradually be increased over two weeks or more. Otherwise, your horses should be fine assuming their is proper grazing material available.

Oftentimes, horses are smart enough to know which plants are safe for them to eat in the field, but not all of the time.

As long as there is ample grass or hay they won't eat the weeds. If no food is available any weed or fern will be dangerous.

This mostly depends on where you are located. There are a plants that are poisioneous to horses found in different parts of the country so see what's in your area.
