Anything that plugs into the wall for electricity can be hurt by a power surge. Most treadmills now have a displace and various functions that require electricity.

Yes you do need a surge protector. All expensive electronics that have a high electricity intake require a surge protector due to a potential spike in current can burn out crucial components. Particularly would recommend the APC surge protectors as they are very high quality and will be able to protect your equipment.

If you live in an area where lightning storms are common, or other issues like living in an old house with dated lines, a surge protector is always a wise choice for your valued electronics. Keep in mind a power bar is not a surge protector!
