A doctor will need to choose the rate and schedule of Atenolol reduction. It can be reduced and weaned, but carefully to avoid serous effects such as a heart attack.

First and foremost, talk with your medical doctor. Never start, reduce, or stop a medication without your doctors approval. When was your last physical exam? When do you take these readings of 36 - 50? (morning, night) Please call your medical professional and discuss these readings with him/her. Schedule a physical exam in the near future.

I would call the doctor that prescribe the medicine to you and ask him if this is okay. There may be other reasons your pulse rate is 36-50 and you need to have this checked this out.

The only proper way to reduce your dose of Atenolo is seek your doctors advice. Reducing the dose of any medical without instruction from a doctor could pose a life threatening condition.
