You can sometimes trust a used game system. I have purchased quite a few used xbox 360 and they have all worked. But it's always better to buy new systems.

That depends on how much the system has been played. If it's an almost new, very little played system, the chances are it's in perfect condition, but on the other hand people may deceive you in order to get a better price. So it's good to be wary, but even better to buy from someone you know.

That depends upon the console in question. An Xbox 360 is not trustworthy due to its susceptibility to go RROD which only increases with use. A used PS3 though, is a safe option as Sony takes care of their hardware. A second-hand PS2 is safe if you borrow it for a few days before buying to check out its lens.

In my experience, used game systems usually work pretty well. My advice would be to buy from a reputable game store such as EBGames or GameStop.
