Your tooth is no longer vital, meaning it is a dead tooth. You probalbly hit it or had an injury and it finally died. what you may be seeing is some internal bleeding causing a dark color to appear. The best option to verify this is to see a dentist and have it diagnosed. Sometimes teeth die without any symtoms.

Front teeth tend to do this more than back teeth. It's a sign of tooth rot and decay in most cases. Have it checked out by your dentist.

If your tooth turned black in the back then you can have a cavity just on the lingual side of your tooth and it has not spread to the other side yet. Floss more. you need to go to the dentist to get an x-ray to make sure it is not something worse than a cavity.

I suspect that your tooth is in the process of dying and for some reason has chosen to manifest itself on the back first.
