In my opinion, no this is not a DIY project. It involves having to change the structural archetecture of your house and should only be done by a professional. The steps simplified would be, cut a hole in side of house, excavate foundation, pour foundation, build chimney using materials which will pas code, install fireplace inside hole to code.

Building a fireplace is a trickly job but it can be done at home if you are an experienced DIY'er. Of course you need a flue from fire to outside. Then you need a Venturi back, a grate and an ashpan. Fire clay is essential to seal cracks.
