What is involved with building a home with a solar powered electric system?

My family is building a new home, and we'd like to be as "off the grid" as possible. What is required to install solar panels and wiring?

You must first evaluate your power consumption and decide how many solar panels you can afford and fit on the roof. Solar panels are very expensive and if you are looking to be 'off the grid' you may have alarge initial outlay. The wiring is quite simple and shouldn't pose a problem.

Contact a local supplier/installer of Photovoltaic Solar technology. You can also use an online solar potential calculator to estimate the potential of your roof/property. The return on investment should be calculated before anything is purchased. Your location and exposure are the most important factor, along with available technology and installers. ROI of less than 10 years is best.

To install solar panels , your first consideration is the amount of energy to be produced by the panels. Since it is expected that the panels will produce 12 or 6 volt DC at around 10/20 amperes for producing about 120 watts, your all wirings should stand the high current.

contact your local utility provider as they may offer subsidies, and power buy back. The largest problem faced is power storage (batteries) for peak production times. if your utility will save you from this cost it can be very beneficial. your wiring generally will not need much upgrading

You can research solar powered homes online as well as check out some books on this technology. The thing about them though is that the technology will cost a lot up front. You will get refund and tax credits but it will still much larger investment to self sustaining.

Pump Up the Power: Getting More From Your Grid-Tied PV System Don't waste a penny of your photovoltaic system investmen. Renewable electricity has lots of benefits, but stand-alone (off-grid) systems are more expensive and complex, and require more maintenance than batteryless grid-tied systems. And there are other big advantages to installing systems on the grid

You have to be able to access the roof safely, and have enough electrical knowledge to put in the proper converters at the main service box.
