Can you suggest some ideas for a really classy, subdued 50th birthday party?

My husband is not the raucous type, but I want to do something nice for him.

A nice clam bake, with an appropriate wine (doesnt have to be expensive), or ale if thats what he drinks, if you drink at all. maine mahogany clams are inexpensive and very delicious, feeds a crowd. not your typical barbecue, kind of refreshing. some close friends and family. low key yet everyones there.

Have a 'this is your life' party. Call up his old friends from the past. Pretend that it's just a nice dinner for you two and surprise him with people.

You could have a nice family dinner at your home with some of his favorite foods. Or you could find a nice resturant and make reservations and invite a few of his closest friends and family.

If you want a subdued classy party for a fifty year old, you should try having a black tie affair in a very nice hall with appetizers passed with white glove service.
