Some good ideas would be "first wish," "under the sea," disney charachter themed party," prince or princess theme," or "animal" theme.

It is better to keep 1st birthday parties small with mostly family. All of the excitement is too much for a 1 year old who usually gets cranky fast. Make it after naptime, but well before bedtime. Cover baby with oversized t-shirt and let him go at his cake.

Plan the party for everyone except the one year old, who will have a good time whatever you do as long as there's cake and ice cream. If there are mostly other adults (mothers) with small children, make the party something THEY will enjoy. A puppy is always popular.
