Question by  adrian (16)

Can you please tell me how to add freon to a dehumidifier?

Dehumidifiers use Freon. It utilizes a sealed unit with not ports to evacuate and recharge so you must install saddle valves prior to any service work being done. First the leak must be repaired then the system evacuated and recharged. Usually the cost is more than the replacement.

Apparently people are answering this question that have no idea what they are talking about. Unfortunately, it makes this website totally worthless. Do not believe most of the answers that have been posted to this question. Coolants ARE used in dehumidifiers. And I am also looking for an answer.

Freon is used in dehumidifiers, %100, absolutely. They use the same principle as AC. Freon is compressed in the compressor and is usually quite hot. It is the expansion of the gas that makes it cool. The humidity condenses on the cold coils and the water is removed from air  add a comment

R22 freon, high side from the compressor about 400PSI, low side (where it cools to condense the moisture around 150 to 200 PSI. You need to monitor both when adding freon. Specs should be posted inside unit. don't have guages, much cheaper to replace.  add a comment

I think that you have your household appliances confused. A dehumidifer removes mosisture from the the air, people often use it in winter or in basements. Dehumidifers don't use freon, you are thinking of an air conditioner that cools the air. You need special training and tools to replace this freon, call a HVAC repair service.

I'm sorry but, yes they do use refrigerant which is commonly known as "freon". It's actual name is R-22 refrigerant. However, some of the newer ones use R-134a which is commonly known as "Puron" .  add a comment

Absolutely uses freon. Moisture forms on the cold coils(the low side) due to the expansion of freon. It is then compressed which generates heat. When it expands it cools and the process repeats  add a comment

It should be evident though, that the closed circuit has a leak and you'll need to find it. But how? You'll start by installing an admission valve to your installation (in case there isn't - and usually there isn't) on the low pressure section of the circuit.

Pretty simple process, just open up the main panel on the top of the humidifier, it's clearly labeled, just unscrew the lid and add til full.

warnings (continued): liquid freon entering the instalation will damage the compressor unit. explosion may occur if the installation is overfilled. try to use the same type of cooling agent as initially was used to prevent risk of explosion or fire. Now that you know "how", you would probably want_to_consult_a_technician ;)!

weld all leaking spots. next, connect a vacuum pump to the valve and remove air from the installation. next, connect your freon source to the valve, and since you don't have any specialized instruments to monitor the preassure in the system , just add freon gass little by little until

Use caution when welding with any freon still in system. Becomes a very noxious gas and can stop your breathing. Been there, done that, still kicking at 60  add a comment

until you can see the air exchange portion of the spiral freezing up. leave it like that and give it a try. if no randament, add a little more freon. this is it, you're done. now please, make sure you read the final section containing warnings and suggestions

Dehumidifiers don't use freon, air conditioners do, and besides freon can be very dangerous to use. Instead, use a vac pump to clear the charging line.

Yeah, Nobody has a fkn clue! Go To Advance Auto and buy a can of R-134a + hose kit with a guage. They also sell an adapter kit that has 5 or 6 adapters that will screw on to about anything that uses freon. AC units, Refrigerators, Freezers and "DEHUMIDIFIERS"

Dehumidifier doesn't use freon but an air conditioner do. A dehumidifier removes moisture from air and people uses it for the winter or in a basement. You're are describing an air conditioner type of problem. If you're a novice you need special tools to replace freon cause it is very dangerous to use. Call a HVAC repair service.

Just buy another one, they are relatively cheap. Or get a window AC unit and add a hose to the drain. Good for all seasons.

Laura27 parafrazed mb. Unfortunately she gave the same worthless answer. Both of them have no clue; no idea what they're talking about. Beside that, suggesting someone who wants to get an answer on a "how to" type of question to go to a specialist is just plain ignorant. Furthermore ...
