Freon is a compressed gas and is illegal to have without a permit. Adding freon to an air conditioner is like inflating a tire in that they want to have the correct amount of pressure in the freon resivoir. So, they will hook the tank up and "inflate" to the correct PSI.

Generally, YOU DON'T. The U.S. EPA Environement-Protection-Agency REQUIRES that a Section 608 (stationary) or Section 609 (motor vehicle) CERTIFIED technician repair your air conditioner leaks BEFORE adding/replacing any additional freon/refrigerant.

Make sure the outside unit is running. You need a set of airconditioning gauges, and freon.Connect the blue hose to the low pressure copper line, the red hose to the high pressure line and the yellow hose to the freon jug.If it's low, turn the knob on the blue hose, add as needed.

Make sure to empty the jug into the air conditioner as wel. Then call your local technician to fix your screw-up. You should never mess with the refrigeration system of you home or vehicle system without the proper certification and training.  add a comment

You can just adjust open the parts and add on the freon. Ask a technician for help if you don't know how.

Generally, "YOU" DON'T. First, a U.S.-EPA (Section 608 stationary/universal, 609 motor vehicle) certified technician locates & plugs all refrigerant loop leaks; Then the certified technician identifies the appropriate replacement refrigerant, conditioner-lubricant, and/or leak detection UV-dye; and recharges your system checking charge & operation with that refrigerant's hi/lo-side manifold gauge set.

You have to have a licensed technician that is EPA approved do it for you that is the only way it can be done.

It needs special gages and tools but pretty much you're going to put the freon can to the unit and put it in.
