As this meter is located on the outside of the air intake you should just replace it as they are not to much through a parts store. A detailed wiring outline is what you would need to fix it.

Simply replace the Air mass meter. They are really cheap and you can get them from any auto repair shop.

The problem with Volvos is that their square design often leads to trapped dirt and other small debris under the front hood. The best solution would be to take a can of condensed air to the gauges and sensors located on the right side of the engine.

The air mass meter is a sensor and chances are that the car is not having a problem but that the sensor is bad. Try replacing the sensor.

Pick up a can of MAF cleaner or electrical parts cleaner and clean the inside of it. If that doesn't work, make sure you are getting 12v at the wire harness connection. If you aren't then you need to check your grounds and power sources. If you do have 12v Then you will need to buy a new sensor.

You will most likely need to replace the mass meter as a whole. It may be repairable but is most likely broke.
