Once the windshield is scratched it is possible to put in a glass filler to fix it as long as the scratch is not too bad. You may have to bring it to a professional to get fixed though.

There are companies that specialize in fixing cracked or scratched windshields. It's not that expensive compared to getting a new windshield. I have had a crack fixed in my car one time. They have a special material they use to repair the damage and it's hard to detect that you ever had a crack.
