Can somebody who doesn't know much about cars understand a carburetor diagram?

Yes, as long as you have a basic understanding. There is not much to a carburetor, but there are a lot of small pieces so be careful.

I guess it would be difficult for an amateur to understand the whole diagram. If you are thinking about repairing it, you should probably not do this.
