I was recently diagnosed with extensive scaring in my kidneys, the only thing that I can come up with that could have caused it is kidney stones.

Yes, kidney stones can cause extensive scarring in the kidneys. Usually though, this is not the case and kidney stones are treated and removed successfully without damage to the kidneys. However, once a patient has kidney stones, the stones are more likely to reoccur which may be why kidney stones could have caused damage over time.

There are many reasons for scarring in the kidney tissue. Your doctor should be able to tell you possible reasons. There is no need for guesswork.

Kidney stones may cause kidney damage if they produce obstruction for a long enough period that they produce dilation of portions of the kidney. Also, the actual stones, when large and irregular, may cause direct damage.

Yes. Kidney stones are crystallized minerals and have sharp edges. This is why they are so difficult to pass through your system.
