guinea pigs

Question by  Jenn (116)

Can I use Frontline for guinea pigs?

Answer by  kph0329 (637)

No, do not use Frontline on your guinea pig. Fronline is a neurotoxin and is even dangerous to humans, much less a sweet little guinea pig. Find a flea shampoo or other preparation that is safe for kittens or maybe even a natural flea rememdy.

No. Frontline is not safe for guinea pigs. Normally a vet will prescribe ivermectin for mites, or maybe revolution for fleas. You should not begin treatment without vet supervision (and a properly trained exotics vet with rodent experience, not an ordinary cat/dog vet), because it can be dangerous or ineffective (or both) to use the wrong dosage.

No, frontline is not safe for guinea pigs. If your pig has fleas, the best medication is Revolution. More likely it is mites, which are treated with topical ivermectin. Before starting a course of any medication, though, you must take your pig to an exotics vet who can make a proper diagnosis and prescribe the right treatment.
