Can I sue a company for releasing unauthorized personal information?

It depends on what was released and the problems it caused you by doing so. If you gave the company personal information, there was likely a statement of confidentiality. If the company violated the contract, they could be liable if you can prove real harm. Unfortunately, being annoyed is not real harm.

It really depends on the circumstances. If no actual damages were incurred, and especially if the company took afforts to safeguard your identity, probably not successfully--though there is a common law notion that certain civil matters warrant nominal damages even if no actual economic damages were incurred.

As my father, a retired attorney, always used to say, "You can sue anyone for anything. The more relevant question is 'will you win? "" It takes but a filing fee and a printer to file a lawsuit, what you really want to know is whether your case has merit and the short answer is, it depends. Consult a local attorney.

You need to check a number of things, your fine print for one. You need to ascertain if your information was protected. Check state laws as well- it varies widely.
