Can I feed Fancy Feast cat food to a cat with kidney disease?

Answer by  Anonymous

Yes, if you have to. It's better to have your cats be on a prescription diet, but if Fancy Feast is all they'll eat, it's more important that they get some food. If you want to read more about kidney disease in cats, google search for "Tanya's Feline CRF".

Cats need protein protein which is high in phosphorous which damages the kidneys. Prescription kidney food is low in phosphorous but also low in protein. You can add a phosphorous blocker to food called Aluminum Hydroxide Gel. A compounding pharmacy has this. Check with your vet.

For some cats with kidney diesease you will need to feed them special food. Talk to your vet to know exactly what you should do in regards to feeding your cat.

No! Cats with Kidney disease are usually put on special veterinary-prescribed food. This prescription food is specially designed to be low in protein. Store bought brands will have far too much protein and will cause further damage to the already stressed kidneys. Talk to your vet because in addition to food, there are often drugs and other treatments needed too.
