Can an underactive thyroid cause arthritis?

yes, as the result of an autoimmunity reaction. there can be found antibodies against the thyroid gland that are precipitating in the joints and in that way causing arthritis.

Their are various opinions on this subject but when comparing the symptoms of arthritis and the symptoms of an under active thyroid they are similar as both diseases can produce sore muscles, slower movements and generalized weakness in the muscles.

One of the functions of the thyroid gland is to eliminate guanidine - a toxic substance. This chemical is created a result of metabolism. If thyroid is underactive, guanidine that is widely found especially in some cooked foodstuffs, beef and/or meat, will increase. When guanidine becomes much, it produces alkalosis, that deposits calcium in the joints, causing plan and arthritis.
