The first thing to reduce pain would be a change in the dog's diet. Ensure you are using quality food with no additional coloring, preservatives, soy, wheat or corn. You could also reduce the amount of dog food, and supplement with very small pieces of raw vegetables. Carrots, celery, lettuce are excellent choices.

Your best bet is an NSAID prescribed by your veternarian. Aspirin, Advil, and Tylenol are poor substitutes for severe arthritis and can also end up being more costly in the long run. However, glucosamine is a commonly accepted supplement for arthritis. Shark and bovine cartilage has also been shown to have some effectiveness.
