Typically a past employer can only verify that you worked for them and for how long. They cannot go into specifics as they open themselves to lawsuits about slander.

In most states, an employer can only state that you were employed for the specific duration of your employment, your official job title, and whether you quit, were fired, or laid off. If they give adverse information, they may be liable if you are unable to get a job due to their feedback.

In general, a former employer can tell anyone anything about you. Only a very few items, such as your social security number and certain health information, are protected.

They can give out information pertinent to the work you were doing, such as your name, position, job responsibilities, hours, etc. They, of course, also have the option of not giving that out. But they should not be giving away addresses, medical information, or anything along those lines.

In most areas laws prohibit a past employer from giving out any information to about employee's with the exception of your dates of employment. Perspective employers usually will ask, "Would you hire this person again? " as a way to find out if the employee was a good one or not.

They can't legally give out personal information about anyone. If they gave out personal information to a new employer it is only because they require the information for their process.
