Coccidiosis is a common cause of diarrhea in puppies younger than 6 months old. It takes at least 6 months for their immune systems to develop enough to combat the protazoan. Coccidia is very contagious. Otherwise healthy adult dogs may show no sign of infestation, easily spreading coccidia to puppies.

Coccidia are parasites that can be ingested from contaminated soils, contaminated water sources, or contaminated kennel areas at any age. A puppy can show signs, generally diarrhea and or bloody discharge from the rectum that usually comes and goes, by the time that puppy is four months of age.

Yes, young puppies can develop coccidia. If you are concerned that your dog has coccidia, you should take a stool sample to the vet for analysis. Coccidia is easy to treat once diagnosed.

Yes. But by asking this question, I assume the puppy has diarrhea. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately to make sure that is not something more serious, such as parvovirus, which is prevalent in puppies & is fatal without treatment.
