The songs the winners record as their first singles are often originals, like "A Moment Like This," (Kelly Clarkon) "I Believe," (Fantasia) and "Inside Your Heaven" (Carrie Underwood). Contestants sometimes play original music during their auditions, but perform cover songs on the actual show.

I do believe that on the shows they all sing cover songs. Some people audition with an original song. On the last show of the season they usually sing an original song written by someone unknown. They usually hold a contest for people to write an original song for he Idols to sing on the last show!
