Smart Guide: Decks: Step-by-Step Projects by Steve Cory is a good, well illustrated one, and you can usually buy it for under ten dollars. Black & Decker Here's cks: Build Your Very Own Deck in 12 Easy Steps by Editors of CPi is also very well priced.

A book entitled, Building a Deck: Expert Advice from Start to Finish, is an excellent place to start. It is very user friendly.

I would try the magazine ReadyMade. They also have a web site. They have a huge amount of information on creating your own furniture. It is all modern stuff also.
