Tarantula's are not dangerous in the sense that they will kill you. And your friend is right, they are not poisonous- they are venomous. Two very different things. There are no known fatalities in relation to tarantula bites, although they can produce some very painful after-effects.

Bites from Tarantulas are in most cases less dangerous than a bee sting. If someone is allergic that can cause problems. Most tarantulas are reluctant to bite.
