Online bidding sites are horrible. Clients always opt for cheapest, least experienced freelancer. Build your portfolio with self-assignments. Network locally. Start a blog. Scour the Writer's Market. Check out Robert Bly's books and website for ideas. Read "Guerilla Marketing For Writers." Do not whore yourself out through bid sites.

Often the best place to build a portfolio is one of the open community sites such as Associated Content or Helium. You might not make any money right away, but it will give you a portfolio that will help you compete with the more established writers who are usually looking for work on online bidding sites.

Absolutely. Try Elance to get started. It will take time, though, so you must be patient. Once you establish yourself with a few projects, more will come in, and you can build your portfolio that way. Some people make thousands on this website. It is definitely worth the time and effort.

Online bidding sites have nothing to do with starting as a freelance writer. They are for buying and selling things via auction via online. U need to start a blog or something where your actually writing things and make it so it is a popular site and people visit it regularly

Online bidding sites can be a good way to get started but the most preferred method is to write solid articles and submit them to appropriate magazines or publications. Additionally many small newspapers will accept submissions for unpaid interest or opinion pieces.
