Well it depends on how old your son is. It's not the coolest thing to wear. The best shoes for Kids if they are into skater shoes, is the ones at West 49 and also every Kid loves to wear nike and adidas. Those are cool shoes. Keds may be cool depending on design.

Everyone has a different opinion on what "cool" is. My advice is to let your son wear the shoes he want to. If he likes Keds, get them for him!

As a girl, I do not find Keds to be very "cool" or attractive. I prefer guys to wear something more stylish.

Some of the men's Keds they have out now are cool like the Champion CVO shoes since they kind of look like Van's footwear a little bit. If you buy your son a basic color like black or blue he will probably think they are cool because he can wear them with anything.
