Why won't my boat engine run after it starts up?

This could be any of hundreds of reasons as there is such a variety of boat engines. My first thought is fuel pump or bad fuel. Did the fuel sit in the tank over the winter and you're just starting it up again? If so try emptying the fuel tank and putting in fresh fuel.

Basic troubleshooting is needed when your boat engine won't start. Check your coolant and oil levels. Check propellant obstacles and the ignition fuses. Open the fuel vent and trim VO.
