Why isn't over population mentioned more often as the cause of pollution, famine, poverty, illiteracy and war?

Over population is not mentioned as often because it has not impacted the world as the other problems had. It will become a bigger problem as natural resources dwindle.

There are a couple of reasons. Right now, or at least recently, world opinion had swung towards the "more and bigger" growth-oriented mentality, with economic growth being viewed as the solution to the world's problems, not the cause. Also, the dire predictions of 50 years ago that population growth would lead to apocalypse had not yet proven true.
