Why is there discharging blood from my dog's nipples?

Discharge from the nipples in pregnant dogs should start at the end of gestation--so 5-7 weeks after being bred. Not all dogs "read the book" and this could be normal.

There are a number of possibilities for a bloody discharge from your dog's nipples. This could result from aggressive nursing by puppies if the dog has a suckling litter. Another possibility is the presence of a mammory tumor. Usually you would also notice swelling with this condition. It could also be the result of injury. You should consult a veterinarian.

Does the dog also have a fever? Diarrhea? Seem tired and less bouncy? It could be an infection and need medical attention. You could try cleaning the area with some antibacterial soap twice a day and apply warm compresses(microwave a wet hand towel) until you can get in to see a Vet for some antibiotics.

Usually when there is blood present on your dog's nipples, they may be infected, or the dog could be in heat. Most times it is a condition called Mastitis. To fix this, be sure to clean your dog's nipples 4-5 times a day and keep a warm compression on them to help ease the pain and infection.
