Numbness of any body part always involves the nerves leading to and coming from that particular area. The possibilities are compression, disease or injury of the nerves.

Maybe it is cold outside; this can cause your ear to be numb. If you just had it pierced, it may be healing. The nerves in your ear may be having a spasm. It will probably go away.

The outside of your ear may be numb because you have recently been in cold weather. The outside of your ear may be numb because you have recently received numbing medication. The outside of your ear may be numb because you are getting older and your senses are getting weaker.
