What causes a limb to go numb?

When I sit for awhile, my leg goes numb. Sometimes when I wake up, my arm will be numb.

I have the same problems occasionally, and asked my doctor about it. He said it was caused by poor circulation. It used to happen very often, but I was a smoker, and that causes poor circulation. Since I quit smoking, it has improved alot!

When you sit in the same position for awhile, blood does not circulate very well. There is less blood flow towards your leg, so your leg will start to feel numb.
