Windows assigned the wrong program to the file. Right click the file, Select Open With on the menu, then select Acrobat Reader. To fix this permanently, select the file, then use Tools / Folder Options, and select File Type Tab. Pick Adobe Reader from the very long list. Click OK

Somehow you set your default program to open that type of file with Notepad instead of adobe reader. Though, you can still open it with Adobe Reader if you chose. Find the file and right click on it. Scroll down the menu that pops up and click "Open With". Scroll down the list till you see Adobe Reader.

This is a common error and can be solved. Goto the destination where your files are stored. Choose the file, which you want to open in adobe reader. Right click that file and goto properties and change the option that shows "opens with" to adobe reader. Now you are done and can open files of that type in adobe reader.

Your file associations are wrong. In an Explorer Window, open "Tools", then "Folder options... ". From the "File Types" tab, find the extension that matches the file you are opening. Click that file type, and click "change". In the resulting window, click "Open With... ". Then select the "Select a program from a list" and select Adobe Reader from the list.

You need to check the file's properties. You probably have the open with properties set to notebook. All you have to do is open its properties and on the general tab click on Open with... After that select Adobe and then save.

Right click on the icon of the file. After that Choose properties. Click on the change button, then choose adobe. Make sure to check the box that says always use this program to open document.
