cotinine testing is done primarily to test to see if you are a smoker or have used tobacco products anytime recently. It is a legal test, however you cannot be forced to take without a court order. Many insurance companies require it before they will sell you an insurance policy.

It is a test that shows if you are tobacco user. Yes they can request that since insurance for a smoker is more expensive for them and they need to decide what they should be asking you to pay for. It is a blood test, and I would not worry too much about it.
