Why is a sentence punctuated?

Answer by  lonelywolf (2117)

Originally, punctuation did not exist. Punctuation was invented to help people read out loud (to indicated pauses and stops, for example) and to help foreign speakers learn the language.

Sentences are punctuated in order that the reader can better understand them. Punctuation tells the reader when to pause, when to stop, and when an idea is continuing, for example.
