A bride's veil is part of traditional wedding fashion because it adds an element of purity and modesty to the outfit. It is meant to maintain the image of bridal virginity upon marriage - unseen and untouched and viewed for the first time in an intimate sense by her husband when he officially lifts that veil in marriage.

Brides wear veils as a way to demonstrate that women are subordinate to men. The groom will lift the bride's veil to symbolize his dominance over his wife. If a woman were to lift her own veil, it would be to show her independence from her husband.

The veil is lifted from the bride's face after her father gives her away. It is supposed to reprecent the first time that the groom has ever seen her in a pure light.

Veils were initially incorporated to keep flies away from a bride's face, or to disguise the fact that they may be crying. Other ideas are the superstition that brides and grooms should not see each other before they are married.
