there could be several causes. the timing could be off on the ignition. if the tractor is a carb type fuel system, the engine may be burning too much fuel. as a result, some of the fuel could be going into the exhaust pipe. check the timing and the fuel mixture.

There exists some tractors, such as lawn tractors, that can easily backfire if it is not forced down into an idling position before the machine is completely turned off. The moral of this story is to just let the machine idle for a few minutes before turning it off. Obviously, there could be other reasons for backfiring.

The main things that would make an engine backfire is either too much fuel or your timing is off. If there is too much fuel going in it will not all burn and it will ignite in the exhaust. Timing can cause a late firing that creates a similar situation.
