Why does my Sony DVD player no longer read a disc.If I insert a disk?

A common Sony problem is that sometimes the lasers in your DVD player can go bad or get so dirty that it can no longer read the data on the disc clearly. Same thing happens with Sony Blu Ray players. Though that is if it happens even with new discs. If it is an old disc, look for scratches.

One reason that your dvd player wont read the disk is dirt. If the optical eye inside the dvd drive is dirty, or smeared it will not read the disk.

It might be the DVD player or the DVD. So first try another DVD, if it works, then you clean or replace your DVD otherwise use a cleaning DVD.
