A hard drive is made of different magnetic disc like spindles. These rotate and information is retrieved. When these spindles rotate, it makes spinning noises.

The spinning noise the drive is making is probably coming from the bad sectors that are on the drive. If the drive is old, or you hit him somewhere it makes a places on the disk that are hard to be read. And for that he jumps thought the data.

This is most likely the fan spinning on the external hard drive. To figure this out, stop the fan and see if the noise stops.

It is normal for non-solid state hard drives to make some noises but you may have sector issues on the head of the drive.

If your hard drive seems to be making more noise than usual, there is a good chance it has become fragmented. Hard drive fragmentation occurs when files and folders are moved around, added, copied, and deleted. You can take the defragmentation process one step further and optimize your hard drive
