The Gross smell that you're probably smelling is the wonderful smell of Wet Dog. Dry your dog immediately and use a shampoo that smells good. The dog will smell better.
It could be the type of shampoo you are using. Sometimes a dog with longer fur may smell bad when there fur is wet. Once they are dry they should smell nice and fresh.
Most likely, your pooch is not getting fully dry after his bath, hence smelling like wet dog. Simply towel him or her dry, brush their coat, and then use a hair dryer.
The water actually "activates" the dirt and bacteria underneath your dog's fur, and releases these scents into the air. This is whats known as "Wet Dog"
