Why does my chainsaw leak gas when its running?

It's possible that there is a hole in the tank that holds the gas. When the chainsaw is it the vibration may allow the hole to leak, either by moving an obstruction out of the way or via vibration. I'd advise you get it repaired.

Sounds like you either have a loose fuel line, or a loose gasket. When the engine is on it becomes pressurized, which would force the fuel through any open gap.

The most likely cause is a stuck or bad float in the chain saw's carburetor. Either that or a cracked or loose fuel line.

It leaks because while it is running the engine is in motion putting stress on the seals. Which cause the gasoline to leak through these seals while it is running. This is usually caused by lack of maintenance of the equipment. A proper rebuild with new seals would fix this issue.

Your chainsaw has a dangerous leak in one of the hoses or most likely one of the metal to metal fittings. The vibration enhances the leak. You should replace all the rubber hoses first making sure to use new clamps as well.
