Asparagus is high in certain vitamins and minerals. These vitamins and minerals, when processed by the human body, affect the odor of one's urine. Other fruits and vegetables such as beets, carrots, tomatoes, and pineapple can also effect the smell, color, and clarity of one's urine as well. Eat sparingly to avoid this effect.

Asparagus causes a change to the smell of one's urine because of a chemical called methyl mercaptan which has to be broken down in the bodies digestive system. Methyl mercaptan is a sulfur like gas which causes a reaction within the body, ie, change in urine scent. Aspargus also contains a compound known as asparagine which contributes to the smell.
