If you are talking about movies which are "adult," or pornographic, it is a standard which Blockbuster maintains, as they have mentioned many times that they are a "family," business, and that there are other stores to buy that content. As long as the material is "acceptable," Blockbuster will carry (or can order) pretty much all movies.

Several reasons. They might not be able to reach a deal with the rights-holder, usually the studio. They may believe that carrying the movie would offend some customers. Or they may feel the movie will not rent out enough to justify the costs of providing it.

Licensing agreements, content, demand and price all factor into Blockbuster's decision to carry a movie. As in any business they stick with the most profitable selections. If they happen to disappoint a few people by not having an obscure title, it is a risk they are willing to take.

In an effort to seem family-friendly, Blockbuster refuses to carry movies with NC-17 ratings or overly adult themes. This is purely a marketing decision to appeal to families.
