Alcohol is processed in the body through the liver and excess alcohol causes fat deposits to build up in the liver which blocks its normal every day process of filtering oxygen and red blood cells in the body. Liver cells start to die from this and scar tissue begins to develop which will cause the liver to shut down completely.

Alcohol is toxic to the liver, causing it to become fatty, which blocks oxygen delivery, causing damage. The more you drink, the less chance the liver has to repair itself.
