The Oxygen sensor measures the level of oxygen in the exhaust, which allows the computer to monitor and adjust the mixture. Without it, the engine's horsepower and efficiency suffer.

It measures the amount of oxygen to find the air/fuel ratio. Then it adjust fuel accordingly. When broken it will not adjust fuel causing running problems and wasting fuel.
