Why do you have to put salt in a water softener?

Salt is used for Regneration of water softner. The sodiuim ion in the salt will be exchanged with the softner. The softner is regenerated by retaining sodium ion which later absorbs chloride etc from hard water and thus softens the water

Water softener is used because of hard water. Hard water can cause problem flowing through pipes and softener helps to relieve this problem.
