Salt does have some germ killing properties. It is recommended in some natural toothpaste and tooth powers recipes. The problem with using salt is that it can not penetrate down into an infection, it can only treat the surface. So it would be of little use for an infected tooth.

You cannot drink salt water; it will make you vomit. Gargling with salt water will hurt the germs, but it is unlikely to cure the problem if you already have an infection. Only antibiotics can help.
